On A Delighted Note
Some of you may remember a couple of years ago when my friend Expat Mike was blogging from Amsterdam. Well, now he’s in Italy, and his blog is alive again, and it’s already wonderful. He’s settling in, but before you get to that, you can read about his adventures with Tina, the worst person to sit next to on the plane EVER:
Tina has a few health problems. She has diabetes, gout, severe asthma, sleep apnea, and fibromyalgia. She also suffers from claustrophobia, depression, and anxiety attacks. She has a pinched nerve, a ruptured disc, and a bunion. She is carrying medicines for all of these. We discuss each medicine in order and their associated side effects. I worry that in Italy I will be declared her common-law primary care physician.
For those of you who have never read his work, I think you will agree that Michael is wasting his talent as an academic. My ultimate goal is to harangue him into blogging even when he’s not traveling, so maybe if you doggedly follow his adventures, it will inspire him.

The link isn’t quite right, I think, but it’s easy enough to delete the excess part of the URL.
The entry about Tina is great, but I enjoyed even more the one about getting settled in Rome. Boy, is it true about there being laws about eating in Italy. I’ve never been there, but I’ve heard from everyone I know who’s visited. Even my mother years ago (and she’s a nice midwestern lady who makes it a principle never to complain about anything): she wanted to hang on to the last of her salad to finish with her main course, but the waiter would not bring the main course until he had removed the salad. That rule cannot be violated.

Yay Expat Mike! Loved the Amsterdam blog; can’t wait for the Italian version. My daughter goes to the University of Michigan, and I’ve told her to find him and take one of his classes. He’s got to be an awesomely funny prof, right?

My undying gratitude! In recent days I’ve realized: my husband’s overseas trip will mean a quick trip to Amsterdam in the fall for me; I read this great blog about it once . . .; I cannot, for the life of me recall enough details to track down that blog or any ensuing recommendations about Amsterdam. I can see it again now! Yay!! Thank you!
