An Administrative Note

I’ve been meaning to mention that I’m trying to fix the fact that this theme, which I like so much in other ways, has like NO contrast between regular text and link text. But every time I change it on the stylesheet, it changes the post titles and everything else in the main part of the page that’s linked, and it doesn’t look right. So I’m trying to figure that out, and I’m having no luck. It may be that there’s no distinction in the theme between the title of the post and the content of the post (which: dumb, if true), in which case I’m going to have to look for a color that has enough contrast for a link color without looking really conspicuous and distracting in post titles. But I am aware of it, and thanks for your patience!

Adventures In Comments

I don’t always get around to answering questions and responding to stuff that comes up in the comments, so I thought I’d try to knock out a bunch at once. Except for today (when I had enough free time to share songs sung by Neil Diamond impersonators), I’ve actually been wildly busy lately in the best way, but there’s a bunch of stuff I meant to get back to, so let’s go.

Hey, Look Over Here Now!

First of all, I’m sorry for making you readjust so soon. When I started this blog as a freebie at WordPress.com (which is a GREAT place to get a free blog, by the way), I didn’t anticipate that I was going to enjoy it so much and eventually yearn for my own URL and enormously more control over the way it works. Furthermore, I didn’t anticipate how easy it would be to just attach it to the same hosting account where I’ve had F&D for such a long time.

There are a bunch of reasons this is better — the biggest one is that WordPress.com blogs are limited, both in use and in functionality. I can’t currently imagine a time when I would use this place to sell you anything, but if I wanted to, I couldn’t without moving it. Furthermore, and much more currently relevant, you can’t put plugins on WordPress.com blogs, for the most part, and WordPress plugins are kind of like Firefox extensions, in that they have the capacity to make the blogging tool infinitely more flexible, fun, and interesting. (For instance, I love their “Share This” button that you will now see with each post — I do so much sharing myself that having that available seems like a solid idea.)

So please do three things for me, if you will:

  • If you’ve been kind enough to bookmark me, move your bookmark here.
  • If you’ve been kind enough to subscribe to the RSS feed, update your subscription.
  • If you’ve been kind enough to give me a link, update it.

I’ve done a little business during the transfer — I updated the My Writing page (formerly Portfolio; whatever, I fiddle around) to reflect what I believe is at least the third and possibly the fourth URL style at TWoP in the last twelve months, and to remove a couple of things that apparently are gone forever. (The West Wing recaps are still waiting for an update — they seem to be missing, but I suspect they’re coming back. But years and years of Mondo Extras have apparently been pruned entirely, including my Three’s Company TV movie Extra.) (You know what? Let’s don’t get me started.)

Also, I imported the old blog over the weekend, so there were about five posts that I had to copy over here manually, so your awesome comments didn’t come with them, I’m sorry to say. I was afraid that trying to update the import was going to be a bigger nightmare than I would be able to manage. So I’m just punting, and we’ll move on from here.

You guys have been, in the first few weeks, completely great, seriously. I have loved having a new home, I have loved your enthusiastic and supportive response, and you have played a huge part in making my transition to freelancing really feel okay.

I have much, much, MUCH more control over the layout and functioning now, so you may see some fiddling, but I’m pretty happy right now with how easy this was, and I look forward to seeing you all around.
